Denosa shop steward moved to old TB Hospital
The protest was ignited by the suspension of a Denosa shop steward and staff members have labelled the move a blatant attempt to silence workers.
Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) members pitched in numbers and demanded the removal of Witbank Hospital CEO Khumbuzile Madonsela earlier this week.
The nursing staff members gathered in the hospital’s boardroom, where chanting echoed through the administration building, requesting Madonsela to step down.
The staff said their shop steward was suspended on March 13, and they demanded to know on what grounds he was suspended.
They labelled his suspension as a blatant attempt at intimidation.
“We are tired of empty promises. There are no beds for the patients, and they are lying on the ground. The JoJo tanks are empty, and there is no food for the patients,” one of the nursing staff said.
They said Madonsela is not running the hospital the way it should be run.
“Nothing is happening in the Heritage Building. Work stopped, and in the interim, the hospital can’t cater to all the patients,” the angry staff said.
They added that the suspension of their shop steward is a move to intimidate them, and they will not stop until his suspension is lifted and conditions at the hospital improve.
The Health Department’s spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, said the shop steward was precautionary suspended for alleged misconduct and disrupting services at Witbank Tertiary Hospital.
“However, after some engagement between the provincial management of the department and Denosa Provincial Leadership, the suspension was amended to a precautionary transfer from Witbank Tertiary Hospital to the Internal Medicine Centre,” said Malamule.
WITBANK NEWS reached out to Denosa for comment, but none was received by the time going to print.
