ELM refuses to compromise on electric meter bypassing
Residents are further urged not to interfere with any municipal infrastructure.
The Emalahleni Local Municipality is calling on residents to refrain from tampering with electric infrastructure, including bypassing meters.
The reminder comes after the most recent incident in Die Heuwel Proper, where a resident who was keeping up with the municipality’s bills had bypassed the electric meter.
As a standard procedure, the power was cut off, and a fine was issued.
In their official statement, the Emalahleni Local Municipality reminded residents that they are strongly cautioning them that tampering with municipal electrical infrastructure without authorisation is a criminal offence.

They noted that such activities pose a serious risk of electrocution, endanger the lives of community members, and can lead to power outages and disruption of the electricity supply.
They are calling on residents to make sure that all electricity-related faults or interruptions are reported to the Municipal Call Centre (24 hours): 013 690 6222 / 013 690 6333 / 013 690 6444.
Such concerns are mounting as the municipality owes Eskom billions, and residents’ compliance also plays a role in setting things straight.
