Clr Karien seeks mayor’s interference in Ward 24 streetlight crisis

In her official statement, Clr Karien claimed that there’s no clarity on who should be tasked with repairing streetlights, and that dark streets compromise residents’ lives.

The DA Clr in Ward 24, Karien McDiarmid, has called on Mayor Vusi Nhlapho to take decisive action against municipal officials who continue to pass the responsibility of fixing streetlights in Ward 24.

Karien claims that the ongoing back-and-forth between the municipality’s Technical Service Department and the municipal manager’s office has left residents in the dark – both literally and figuratively.

According to Karien, there is a lack of clarity within the municipality about who should be tasked with repairing the streetlights. This has resulted in officials shifting responsibility instead of providing solutions, leaving residents frustrated.

The situation has worsened, as many streetlights remain in disrepair, and residents stress that this compromises their safety.

Despite repeated complaints and engagements, the municipality has failed to adopt a plan to maintain and repair the streetlights.

Karien said the neglect has fuelled crime and vandalism in the area, with residents forced to live in ‘utter darkness.’ Karien stressed that residents who contribute to rates and taxes deserve the same level of service delivery as others in the town.

“The municipality has blatantly ignored repeated calls for action and comprehensive lists submitted to municipal authorities. No adequate response has come through,” Karien said.

The party added that it will not relent until practical and sustainable solutions are implemented.

Karien has urged the municipality to prioritise service delivery, review its infrastructure, and adopt excellent governance practices that will benefit residents.

“We will not tolerate incompetence. The municipality must start prioritising the delivery of services,” she said.
