Coronation community recovers body of man trapped in abandoned mine

The community got the man out from underneath the fallen rocks in abandoned mine at Coronation.

A man lost his life in an abandoned mine this afternoon when the mid-burden collapsed, trapping him underneath a pile of rocks.

The man was digging for coal when the incident occurred.

Members of the nearby Coronation community dug the man out and brought him to the surface, where he was declared dead.

“This man did not dig for coal to sell; he was trying to find a way to keep his family warm and cook food,” said community members who watched the scene unfold in somber silence.

This tragedy comes shortly after another fatal incident in the Vosman area, where a man died under similar circumstances while digging for coal in an abandoned mine.
