Emalahleni industrial sinkhole stabilised as it awaits fixing

The pipe burst occurred in the early hours of May 27, just on Price Street.

Motorists driving around the Emalahleni industrial area are being urged to remain cautious after a large sinkhole opened up yesterday morning beside a busy road, Price Street.

While the municipality has successfully closed the tap that burst and caused water to erode the ground, preventing further destruction of the cavity, the hole itself remains unrepaired. The exposed asphalt continues to pose a danger to vehicles traveling near the site.

Ward Councillor Sizwe Mathebula confirmed that the matter has been reported to the relevant department. The immediate threat of water worsening the sinkhole has been addressed, but the cavity still poses danger.

Business owners around the area have expressed concerns over the incident, warning that the hazard could expand further if left untreated.

WITBANK NEWS is awaiting a full, detailed comment on the way forward and confirmation of whether the burst didn’t have long-term damage around the area or not.

Until repairs are carried out, motorists are strongly advised to exercise caution when driving around the area.
