Emalahleni Speaker adopts two teams at Kasi Football League tournament
After tight matches between the eight teams, Sgwinya Konke FC and FC Colombia were left to face each other in the final, earning themselves not just awards, but also adoption by Speaker Nombuso Shabangu.
The Ackerville sports ground was buzzing with fun and entertainment as teams from the Kasi Football League competed in a Mandela Day tournament.
Held on July 18 in honour of the late Nelson Mandela’s legacy, the tournament featured eight league teams that brought their A-game to the field.
Sipho Themba, chairman of the league, said the day was all about celebrating the freedom and unity brought by Mandela.
The teams that participated, included Ackerville United, C9 FC, Sgwinya Konke FC, Asinavalo FC, Vikings FC, Klarinet Future Stars, FC Colombia, and Overline United.
After a day of tough competition, Sgwinya Konke FC and FC Colombia were left to compete in the final match. The game ended in a goalless draw, with Sgwinya Konke claiming their champion title on penalties. The top two teams were awarded trophies and medals. Individual awards were also presented to players who stood out.
Themba thanked Umlilo Wevangeli and everyone who contributed to the success of the tournament, particularly the speaker of the Emalahleni Local Municipality, Nombuso Shabangu, for her sponsorship and support.
“We congratulate our winners, and for those who couldn’t make it, know that there are no losers. All teams won; it’s just that there has to be a number one,” she said.

Shabangu added that going forward, she would be working with the league on upcoming projects and pledged to adopt the top two teams from the Mandela Day tournament.
“They will tell me what kind of assistance they need, and I will assist them in the best way I can,” the Speaker said.
