Motorist outsmarts Emalahleni traffic officer in alleged bribe attempt
A video of a traffic cop allegedly taking a bribe in eMalahleni circulated on social media.
The Emalahleni Traffic Department is under scrutiny after a traffic officer was captured on video allegedly requesting a money transfer during a road stop on July 31.
Viral video recalled
The motorist, who asked to remain anonymous, said he had not broken any traffic rules when he was stopped, which reminded him of a viral video of a man demanding money from a traffic officer.
“I could not help but smile thinking about the video,” said the motorist. “When the traffic officer indicated that he was open for a chat, I knew a bribe was coming. I really wanted to storm back and scream, ‘I want my money, where is my money!'”

Electronic transfer requested
He said he never carries cash, and that was when the traffic officer said a money transfer would do.
“He read out his cellphone number where the PIN could be sent,” said the motorist.
“I knew he was not going to the bank immediately to draw the R200, so I headed to the nearest bank and withdrew my own money. I can imagine the disappointment on his face when he got to the bank, only to find he could not withdraw the money.”
