eMalahleni shaken by wave of violent crime after three murders

Residents are in shock following a week marked by two separate brutal attacks, a fatal stabbing in Duvha Park and a shooting on the Kriel-Bethal road that claimed two lives.

eMalahleni residents are left reeling after two separate fatal attacks claimed three lives in the community this past week.

Police are searching for the suspect involved in the murder of a woman who was stabbed to death at her Duvha Park home on October 30.

The victim was discovered by her employer, Storm Webber, after the woman failed to report for work. Webber told Witbank News she knew something was wrong and went to search for her domestic worker.

“When I found her, I could not feel a pulse. She was stabbed several times,” a heartbroken Webber said.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending formal identification and notification of next of kin.

Webber alleged that the victim had obtained a protection order against her ex-boyfriend just two weeks before the attack.

“A piece of paper did not save her life. The police did not protect her,” Webber said, expressing frustration over the tragedy.

Police have not officially named or charged anyone in connection with the murder.

However, they have confirmed that they are searching for the victim’s former boyfriend. Investigations are ongoing.

A neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recalled hearing cries coming from the home on the day of the murder.

“Moments later, it went quiet. I thought they had resolved their issues. I later heard a door opening, and I think that was when the man left,” the neighbour said.

The neighbour added that the victim and her former partner had experienced a volatile relationship in the past.

Arrest in highway shooting

The tragedy comes days after a shooting on October 27 left the community stunned.

A 43-year-old suspect, who allegedly opened fire on a vehicle on the Kriel-Bethal road, killing a man and a woman, was arrested at Greenside Colliery hours after the attack.

According to police reports, CCTV footage from a nearby TotalEnergies garage captured the moment the driver of a grey Chery SUV pulled up parallel to a blue VW Polo and opened fire.

“Police found 13 cartridge cases and four bullet fragments on the scene,” said Witbank police spokesperson Warrant Officer David Ratau.

“Police confiscated a firearm, which is suspected to be the murder weapon,” said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo.

The firearm has been sent for ballistic testing as part of the police investigation.

Ratau said investigations into the three murders are ongoing.
