Operation Shanela II, led by Mpumalanga police in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders, yielded 1 145 arrests this past weekend.

The operation, conducted from August 20 to 23, targeted priority offences such as murder, rape, robbery, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, drug-related offences, illicit mining, possession of gold-bearing material and other serious and violent crimes.

Some of the activities conducted during the operation, which was executed across Mpumalanga, included roadblocks, vehicle control points, stop-and-searches, and high-visibility patrols.

It also included the tracing of wanted suspects, compliance inspections at second-hand goods dealers, liquor outlets, and formal as well as informal businesses.

Suspects are facing charges ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, and assault, among others. The team also recovered firearms and ammunition, drugs, copper cables, counterfeit goods, and suspected stolen vehicles.

“These arrests and recoveries are a clear indication of our sheer determination to destabilise criminal networks and to leave no space for criminals to operate,” Mpumalanga Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise said.

“I want to commend all our members, our sister departments, and all stakeholders who participated in these operations for their dedication, professionalism and teamwork. We thank community members who continue to work with us and for providing valuable information.”
