Although the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) reported fixing roof leaks, sewer systems and floor tiles inside the building, little other progress has been made.

During a follow-up visit to the building shut down by the Department of Employment and Labour (DOL) in July, Witbank News found tables, chairs and office equipment stuffed into corners.

The only sign of renovations is in the room where learner’s licences are written.
Department verifies media evidence of neglect
DCSSL spokesperson Zandile Mavuso said the department would verify all photos and videos Witbank News sent on September 21.
The DOL closed the licensing office and gave the DCSSL 60 days to implement corrective action or appeal the prohibition notice.
Provincial chief inspector Boikie Mampuru said: “The inspection findings confirm that the employer failed to provide a healthy and safe environment by failing to maintain building structures.

“The building was prohibited for occupation due to unsafe electrical installations, biological hazards caused by water leaks and ceiling boards that may collapse at any given time.”

DCSSL spokesperson Moeti Mmusi advised that motorists can collect their drivers’ licences from the Piet Koornhof Building.
“To renew drivers’ licences, motorists can head over to Ga-Nala, Bronkhorstspruit or Middelburg licensing offices where they will be assisted. The satellite office across from Life Cosmos Hospital is available for other vehicle transactions,” Mmusi said.
