Safety advice from police
SAPS advises motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and have enough fuel before travelling. Keep doors locked and windows closed, avoid stopping in isolated areas, and park in well-lit places.
“If approached by a stranger, keep the window only slightly open and drive away if the situation seems suspicious. Avoid travelling alone at night where possible and vary your regular routes. If unfamiliar people are loitering near your driveway, do not stop; drive past and report them to police. Be alert to staged accidents and, if you are bumped from behind and feel unsafe, drive to the nearest police station before stopping.
“During a hijacking, do not resist or reach for valuables. Co-operate, surrender the vehicle and move away from danger as quickly as possible.”
