Big catches prove local waters are alive with fish

Secunda angler pulls massive carp from Rietspruit Dam, adding another chapter to local fishing folklore.

Many a folk story told around the campfire is about the giant fish swimming near the Witbank Dam wall – and, of course, the legendary one that got away.

Recently, Secunda angler Tjokkie Roets proved that these tales are not just campfire myths when he pulled a monster carp out of Rietspruit Dam.

The fish weighed in at 19.2kg. Soon afterwards, he hooked a mirror carp that weighed 17.8kg.

Roets’ catch is solid evidence that there are impressive fish in the water channels flowing towards the Olifants River.

Local anglers regularly hook carp species, mudfish, sharptooth barbel, bass and occasionally yellowfish.

Bass record broken after 21 years

In 1997, Pretoria angler Jannie Steytler caught a massive 6.045kg largemouth bass.

That South African record stood for more than two decades until Wayne Naude broke it in 2018 when he hooked a 7.192kg bass.
