Ward 22 voters in eMalahleni demand change at local polls

From potholes and accountable councillors to free tertiary education, residents turned out on election day with high expectations for community reform.

Young voters in Ward 22 shared different reasons for casting their ballots in the local government elections, but one theme resonated throughout the city: a desire for change.

Witbank News spoke to the voters on voting day to hear what drove them to the polls.

Rorisang Stani, a first-time voter in eMalahleni, expressed excitement about contributing to society through the ballot box.

“I was very excited to contribute to society,” she said.

Her main motivation for voting is the drive for free higher education.

“Individually, I don’t get National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), so I feel like my vote is going to try and make some change,” Stani added.

Infrastructure remains a primary concern for Ward 22 resident Ishmael Dimande, who highlighted the poor condition of local roads.

“My reason for voting is that I want to see changes. There are potholes, and I hope the party I voted for will do better,” Dimande said.

Fellow Ward 22 voter Julia Chokwe said she turned out to vote to ensure her voice was represented and to demand accountable local leadership.

“I voted because I want to see change ever since we’ve been here,” Chokwe said. “There is nothing that shows that we have a councillor, and I also voted because I want my voice to be heard.”
