Daylight robbery in the CBD
Robbers will not hesitate to point a firearm for cash, cellphones and vehicles.
Leaving the bank with your well-earned cash is supposed to be a simple activity in everyone’s lives.
However, for robbers in the Central Business District (CBD), it may be nothing more than an opportunity to commit a crime.
On the afternoon of July 25, a woman drove to the CBD after withdrawing money at a local bank.
It is believed that she was parked on Arras Street when two men approached her with a firearm when she stepped out of her vehicle.
The men allegedly threatened her and demanded her cash, cellphone and vehicle.
“Members of the community must guard against travelling alone.
When going to the bank, they must not announce it and should vary the times they go. Rather complete transactions electronically,” spokesperson for Witbank Police, Sgt David Ratau, advised.
The South African Police Service provides the following safety tips to avoid becoming a victim of cash robbery: If you have to pay an account, consider lower-risk options instead of withdrawing large amounts of cash.
Carry as little cash as possible.
Consider the convenience of paying your accounts electronically and using cellphone banking, internet transfers or ATMs to do your banking.
Community members must be on the lookout for robbers, as they can seem able to afford firearms to threaten people with, but not cellphones or vehicles.
