MMCs back in court in September

The opposition party was at the court this morning and indicated that they are keeping a close eye on proceedings.

The two prominent members of Emalahleni Local Municipality, who were arrested for alleged corruption, were back in court this morning.
Jerry Patrick Dijane (53) and Martha Busi Hlumbane (54) appeared in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court, and the case was postponed to September 7.

Outside the court, Councillor Karien McDermid from the opposition party said they are keeping an eye on the legal proceedings.

“This money should have been used for service delivery. We will not tolerate corruption,” she said.

The two MMCs sent shock waves through the community when they were arrested after allegedly receiving gratification.
This was allegedly part of a R500 000 gratification demanded for a businessman to extend his lease agreement.

According to Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Magonseni Nkosi, the gratification payment on April 26 followed an alleged payment of R40 000 in February last year, reportedly equally shared between Dijane and Hlumbane.
