A new voice is rising from the City of Coal as 27-year-old musician Sibusiso Vilankulo steps into the spotlight with his debut album, ‘Ubizo’.

Blending Afro pop, Hip Hop, and rich cultural elements, Sibusiso’s music is rooted in real-life experiences and emotional storytelling.

For the emerging artist, ‘Ubizo’, meaning ‘calling’, is more than just a title. It represents a lifelong passion that began in his school days and has now grown into a serious musical pursuit.

“I started singing back in 2016 when I was in the school choir,” he said. “That’s when I discovered my talent and realised this is something I want to do.”

The album captures his personal journey, highlighting both hardships and victories. Vilankulo says every track is written from the heart, making the project relatable to listeners from all walks of life.

“I write through my feelings. People will hear my truth in this album,” he said. “It’s not just music; it’s my story.”

Beyond personal reflection, he uses his platform to address serious social issues. One of the key messages in Ubizo is a call to end gender-based violence song, a crisis that continues to affect communities across the country.

“I felt it was important to speak out,” he said. “Even if I haven’t experienced it myself, I see what is happening. We need to stop GBV; our sisters are suffering.”

He said the response to his music has been encouraging, with strong support from his community and growing interest online.

“The support I get keeps me going,” he said. “It shows me that people are listening and connecting with my music.”

As he looks to the future, he has big ambitions. His short-term goal is to grow his audience and increase streams on platforms such as Spotify, while his long-term dream is to become a widely recognised artist.

“I want to collaborate with big artists, both locally and internationally,” he said. “I see myself performing on big stages, maybe even winning awards one day.”
