It is not safe to walk the streets of eMalahleni

Walking the Streets of eMalahleni becomes risky as police investigate back-to-back armed robbery incidents.

Walking in parts of the City of Coal is becoming increasingly dangerous, with pedestrians targeted by armed criminals.

Two separate robbery incidents have once again highlighted the risks faced by people moving on foot in public spaces.

In the first case a man waiting for transport to work was robbed at gunpoint on April 24 at around 04:50 on Churchill Street.

Police said he was approached by two men, and one pointed a firearm at him before demanding his cellphone.

In a second incident in Vosman on April 19 at about 11:30, a pedestrian was robbed at knife-point near KG Mall. Police said the victim was followed after separating from the group and was then confronted by a man.

The man allegedly produced a knife and robbed him of a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing.

Police have confirmed that investigations into both cases are ongoing.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take precautions when walking.

Police advise, “Safety advice includes avoiding walking alone, staying alert while waiting for transport, limiting the use of mobile phones in public, travelling in groups where possible, and avoiding displaying valuables.”
