Residents are urged to avoid illegal electricity token sales
Residents are urged to avoid illegal electricity token sales being circulated via WhatsApp and other platforms.
Residents of eMalahleni have been urged to remain vigilant following reports of fraudulent electricity token sales circulating on WhatsApp and other online platforms.
The scam involves individuals offering prepaid electricity units at unusually low prices. Authorities warn that these offers are illegal and not recognised by any official supplier.
Electricity tokens can only be purchased through authorised vendors, municipal offices, or verified retail outlets linked to approved service providers such as Eskom or local municipalities.
Residents are cautioned against sharing their meter numbers or personal details with unknown individuals, as this may expose them to fraud or meter tampering risks.
Engaging in such transactions could also lead to penalties or electricity disconnection.
Officials advise the public to: Avoid responding to unofficial electricity offers. Never share meter or account details with strangers. Only buy from approved vendors or municipal offices.
Verify suspicious offers before making any payments.
For verification or reporting, residents can contact the Emalahleni Call Centre at 013 690 6222 / 333 / 444 or the Smart Meter Centre at 066 456 5828.
Authorities have called on the community to work together to combat scams and protect vulnerable residents from financial loss.
