Police investigate deaths of child and young man in Klarinet

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of a five-year-old child and a 23-year-old man in Klarinet.

The Klarinet community is in shock following the deaths of a five-year-old child and a 23-year-old man yesterday.

In a video interview seen by Witbank News, a family member alleged that both individuals had consumed biscuits and a cold drink obtained from a local spaza shop on on July 8 shortly before their deaths.

According to the relative, community members told the family that they had seen the 23-year-old man receiving biscuits and a cold drink from the shop owner. She alleged that her five-year-old nephew was also given biscuits.

The relative said the child began crying shortly after eating the biscuits, complaining of sudden vision loss and saying that his eyes were closing.

“I called my neighbour, and when we arrived in the house, the child was no longer breathing. We rushed him to the clinic, but when we arrived, they told us that he had already passed away,” the distraught relative said in the video.

She added that the child had also been vomiting severely before his death.

While at the medical facility, the family received a second devastating blow when they were informed that the 23-year-old man had also died.

Witbank Police Station spokesperson Warrant Officer David Ratau confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened.

“The cause of death has not yet been established, and we are awaiting the post-mortem and forensic results,” Ratau said.
