Police seize unlicensed firearm during R544 vehicle stop in eMalahleni

A routine road patrol led police to an unlicensed gun, one arrest, and a follow-up raid on a property in Klarinet.

A 36-year-old driver was arrested on the R544 in eMalahleni on Tuesday, July 14, for possessing an unlicensed firearm.

The arrest was made by a multidisciplinary team comprising members of the Middelburg Flying Squad, Nkangala District Highway Patrol, and Nkangala District Anti-Hijacking Unit.

Patrol leads to search

Police said they were conducting patrols in the area when they noticed a suspicious Mitsubishi Colt. The vehicle was stopped, and eight occupants were found inside.

During a search of the vehicle, police found the driver in possession of a firearm after he allegedly failed to produce a licence or permit, leading to his arrest and charge.

Follow-up raid

According to police, during further questioning, the driver provided information about a second suspect in Klarinet who was allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

When police arrived at the Klarinet address, the second suspect fled after seeing them approach. During a search of the room, police recovered and seized two black bulletproof vests and two pellet guns.

The firearm recovered during the operation will be sent for ballistic testing to establish whether it was used in the commission of any crimes.

At the time of publication, police had not provided any details regarding the suspect’s court appearance or the status of the case.
