Saving Brian’s life – funds needed for specialised surgery
Brain Boynton’s BackaBuddy campaign is still a long way from the amount needed for a lifesaving operation.
Brian Boynton is recovering at home in good spirits while facing a daily battle against a severe spinal infection.
Boynton’s condition reached a critical stage several months ago when he was admitted to hospital after doctors discovered the infection had eaten away much of his L4, L5 and S1 vertebrae.
An emergency operation was performed to remove dead and infected tissue.
After initial recovery at home with his mother, Sonja le Roux, Boynton was readmitted to hospital two weeks ago when an abscess on his stomach burst open. He is now receiving specialised care at home from a trained medical sister.
Family optimistic despite daily challenges
“Brian is looking good under the circumstances and even picked up a little bit of weight,” said his sister-in-law, Chantelle.“We are currently running two vac pumps on Brian. The bedsores are looking much better.”
Boynton does not have medical aid, and daily medical expenses continue to mount.
A BackaBuddy fundraiser has been opened to assist with costs.

Surgery essential to prevent spread
Boynton requires highly specialised spinal surgery to remove infected bone, prevent the infection from spreading, and stabilise his spine.
While the procedures will not restore his ability to walk, they offer a vital chance to save his life.
Despite the ordeal, Boynton remains positive, adding that he looks forward to simple comforts: “I really miss a bath – long, lingering baths where I can just lie down and relax.”
