Siyanqoba house burglary and rape accused remain in custody as case is postponed

As two accused remain in custody, the community rallies behind the victim and calls for justice.

The case of two men accused of breaking into a Siyanqoba home and raping a woman has been postponed in the eMalahleni Regional Court for pre-trial.

The case was postponed to October 29 following the suspects’ most recent appearance on September 17. The two accused remain in police custody after being denied bail in February, while one suspect remains at large.

Ordeal in Siyanqoba

The matter relates to a house burglary and rape reported on September 21 last year. According to the police, three suspects broke into a woman’s home while she was sleeping with her children.

She reported that after hearing a knock at the door and remaining silent, the intruders smashed a bedroom window to gain entry.

Fearing for her children’s safety, she moved them to another room before the suspects confronted her.

The victim alleged that one of the suspects pointed a firearm at her and demanded money before she was forced into another bedroom and raped.

Two of the suspects were reportedly wearing balaclavas, while one was not. Police said they fled the scene with a plasma television, cellphones, a Wi-Fi router and a gas cylinder.

Community rallies for justice

Women from the community have continued to attend court proceedings in support of the victim, calling for justice and stronger action against gender-based violence.

Community member Nomsa Masiyela previously said: “We stand with the victim and support all women who face such violence. We invite more women to join us, because incidents like this can happen to anyone, and together we can raise our voices for justice.”
