Pedestrians are not safe in eMalahleni

Police advised the public to always stay vigilant, especially when walking in the streets.

Three pedestrians were robbed at gunpoint and knifepoint in different parts of eMalahleni, leaving them without valuables such as cellphones.

According to police, the first incident occurred on October 14 at around 10:00 on Pioneer Street in Klipfontein, when a pedestrian walking in the street was approached by a man who asked for directions to an ATM. When the pedestrian refused to accompany him, the stranger pulled out a firearm, pointed it at the victim, and demanded his wallet and cellphone.

As he handed over his possessions, he was then instructed to walk away without looking back.
Around the same hour, a woman was reportedly abducted and robbed in Watermeyer Street.

The woman told the police that she had been walking with her friend in the street when a charcoal Renault Clio pulled up alongside them with its windows down.

One of the two men inside reportedly held the woman at gunpoint and forced her into the car. They then drove off with her and robbed her of all her belongings before dropping her on the side of the road after driving for a while.

A formal kidnapping charge was opened.
In the third incident, which reportedly occurred on October 15 around 15:30, another resident was walking along the road in Masakhane and was allegedly cornered by three men.

One of the men allegedly threatened him with a knife and robbed him of his cellphone. They all fled the scene thereafter.

Police urge vigilance

Witbank Police Station spokesperson Warrant Officer David Ratau said the cases are under investigation.

“We urge members of the community to remain vigilant, particularly when walking alone or when approached by strangers. Also avoid displaying valuable items such as cellphones in public, remain aware of your surroundings and, where possible, walk in a group,” said Ratau.
