Motorist faces perjury case after ‘hijacked’ car turns out to be with friends

The motorist reported his car hijacked, only for police to later discover that the car had been with friends.

Witbank SAPS is investigating a perjury case after a man reported that he was hijacked, only to find out that his vehicle had allegedly been taken by his friends while he was under the influence.

According to police, the officer on duty on the morning of October 2 received a report of a car that was hijacked.

The owner of the car told the police that he was at the garage when he offered someone he knew a lift.

He claimed that as soon as the man entered his car, five more men followed and they drove in the direction of a hotel in eMalahleni.

He further alleged that when he stopped at the traffic lights, one of the men who was sitting behind him strangled him and pushed him out of the car.

When the police responded to the complaint, they discovered that the car had been taken by his friends as he was under the influence.

A perjury case was opened and investigations are underway.

SAPS advises the public against making false statements under oath, as fabricating incidents such as staging a false hijacking is viewed as a serious offence that can lead to a person being arrested.

“When opening a case docket or completing an affidavit at a police station, only provide information that you know to be completely true,” SAPS says.
