Mirror mirror on my screen, what can I show that hasn’t been seen?
We see and experience it every day. Vanity has become a part of our identities and we all have that “humblebrag bug” that resides in the dark and creeps out every now and then. Social media has made it so much easier for us to create an identity that most of the time is so far from the truth that we even start believing our own posts. Buddy is staring at me with hungry eyes because he is always hungry, but it’s not his fault, it is the cortisone that he has to take for an auto immune condition and in turn he has become a bit overweight. Funny enough as I give him his tablets I realise that we are all “hungry” for more. We are becoming a society that needs to feed off of the “likes” and the “retweets” and we think that directly correlates to our own self-worth but all it does is make us more hungry.
I can only imagine how it will be if my dog starts acting the way I and many others do; I would be so annoyed! I can see him taking a picture of him holding his favourite chew toy in his mouth and the caption of the photo would read: “It’s not about how you fall down; it’s about how you stand up.” A picture is great to show everyone and a quote can evoke thoughts within yourself and others, but at least make the quote match the picture? Honestly that’s the thing that bothers me so much with this culture of ours, we believe that we have to always be perfect and somehow prove to the social realm that we are witty, clever, and funny and all round amazing without any flaws whatsoever and at the end we just come across as being obnoxious and self-centred. The amount of pressure it puts on everyone, especially the younger generation is absurd. They have a very warped image of what is perfect and accepted but still, we are hungry.
Buddy is waving his tail in anticipation of his tablets (which I hide in a vienna) and he is genuinely happy. Maybe is it because of the vienna? Or maybe he has accepted who he is and that he honestly couldn’t care less if someone doesn’t approve of his lifestyle which consists of eating vast amounts of food and being lazy. Nope, it’s definitely the vienna and still we are all hungry.
