Yes that time of the year. No, no not Christmas that is just one day. I am talking about the great machine of consumerism that gets us to “celebrate” it almost two months in advance. How do we celebrate “it” we would ask. They would reply with a laugh and say, “by buying things of course!”
What are we celebrating exactly? Christmas? Well very few malls or shopping centres would actually use the word because we are a country with a wide range of religious beliefs and cultures so they don’t want to offend anyone, which is good. However instead of having major sales and extended shopping hours for all major religious holidays or none of them they make all the references ambiguous. They are not fooling anyone. Traditionally we give presents to people for Christmas, and traditionally we go out and buy those presents and traditionally things are bought at shops i.e Christmas presents.
Brian has warned me that my overuse of the word they might be diminishing my journalistic integrity. Well Brian I am fighting fire with fire. This is me describing our national elections if we gave gifts. Join the fun! Celebrate! Write on paper for freedom and then come buy things that somehow relate to this day of celebration! Sale Sale Sale!
I know people need to make a living and I am all on board for a sale but I feel like they (and for the record they is everyone because we are all guilty of this) are degrading Christmas with vague sale pitches or rein deer I mean they don’t even exist in the southern hemisphere. We could have had our own traditions and unique style of celebrating Christmas in the summer no less if we did not fall into the whole Santa thing. Imagine if they had summer in December in the North. Would Santa we riding a surf board instead of a sleigh?
All I am getting at is that it is not too late to have your own family traditions and if that means a Christmas tree and rein deer then great! Just make sure they are your own and not copied of a holiday movie or a promotional banner at the shops.
