Like they always say in quotes and romantic movies; it’s not what you said but how you said it.
Buddy is running around frantically in the yard as I throw him his ball and you can see the joy and elation on his face when he catches it, but when I get tired of playing (which he clearly doesn’t) I scold him without realising it by raising my voice. I have always tried to regulate the way I say things but to be honest I have failed before, just like everyone else just for the plain reason that we cannot always control our own emotions and words. See unlike humans, dogs don’t always understand our words but more the tone in which we say things, for instance I can greet him with a “hello” and sound upset and he would assume he had done something wrong. Humans on the other hand are more worried about how something is said, in context and vocal tonality.
That’s the thing I have realised about us as a society these days: we have become too sensitive to not only spoken words, but written words as well. We will rather throw hurtful words and insults when we feel offended than to use our words in a proper and constructive manner.
We have become “mean” people and I’m not generalizing with everyone, but saying that everyone has had a slip before. Being in the business of singing I have to warm up my voice, practice my songs and sing it with passion and conviction, but sometimes I sing with too much passion and end up hurting my vocal chords. That’s the same thing we do in our everyday lives, we sometimes don’t understand the weight our words carry and the impact it has on everyone around us so we are blissfully unaware of what’s happening on the inside. Words are the major cause of almost every single argument you or anyone has ever had so isn’t it time that we start controlling and limiting the amount we use unnecessarily each day?
Buddy is locked on the Christmas decorations and looking with a keen eye as I hang every piece and it being the festive season and love is the main thing that’s going around, if that Grinch comes along and pushes you too far, bite your tongue. Better yet, do what I do and throw a ball; maybe that will keep them occupied.
