My disdain for reality television is deep and vast. I will teach future generations of how little reality actually goes into it.
With that point made I have always been curious about why it is so very interesting to watch? I wanted to kick myself when I watched an entire 21 minutes of brides to be pick out wedding dresses? I felt cheated when I realised what I had just done.
That is the mild stuff compared to the hardcore shows like…home renovation shows. They come in all flavours, gardening show, a patio building show, an interior design show, and 20 different cleaning shows to mention a few. Who can forget the juggernaut of reality TV Extreme Home Makeover? Building a glass spiralling staircase for a family of three living in a low to medium income community is television gold.
It is also the show that makes me the most uncomfortable. I Can’t help thinking that these families just want to live in a decent home instead of a miniature Disney land.
“Ok gees what’s your point already,” Hold your horses hypothetical reader for my point is indeed pointy.
The public pool is getting a second wind, and a facelift. It is reopening by the end of this year and it is looking very awesome so far. “What!?” that’s right dear reader an unexpected turn of events for sure. As I was walking around the new facilities and saw the before and after pictures for the buildings and the toilets and I actually got really excited.
Imagine if many years from now we show the residents of eMalahleni pictures of our infrastructure and roads. Will they look back and be happy that they didn’t live in such terrible conditions like a before and after on Extreme Home Makeover or will they look at it and think to themselves, “what a life”.
Yes everything could be better, a lot better but are we going to choose to go forward from here, or continue further backwards. The choice is ours. Brian considers himself an Omni-directional thinker whatever that means.
