Is Independence Day only made for our fellow brothers and sisters abroad?

We all want to be independent and not answer to anyone. We want to do as we please and not follow rules or be restricted. Deep down we all want to succumb to an anarchistic way of life, but at the same time we want to feel safe and protected. Well, Britain found out that you cannot have your cake and eat it too.

Buddy follows a few simple rules in life: Eat, sleep and repeat. Somehow we have fallen into the same trap and have become accustomed to a mundane life of wash rinse and repeat but we carry on. Britain felt the need to assert their independence and leave the EU but it was maybe a case of “cut the nose to spite the face” looking back at it now. They are going to lose so many privileges, rights and safety and it’s all too little too late. We as South Africans have been feeling a need for independence for close to eight years now. The exact amount of time our president has been in office.

See we don’t seek independence from the RSA or from each other, no, we seek independence from being forced to accept corruption as the norm and bad governance alongside it. We seek independence from censorship, not speaking out with facts that paint a different picture than what we are told.  We seek freedom.

Many have called for provinces in SA to become independent which is, to say the least, very unrealistic. Instead we should call for independence from any politics dictating our happiness, our way of life and our relationships with each other and that’s the only way we can become independent from the past, the present and the future.

Buddy seeks independence from food restrictions, he is currently standing by the table and ignoring me with so much conviction that I might actually believe him.
