Follow the leader

As they always say: Do what I say not what I do

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I honestly believe that to be true in many if not all aspects of life. From companies having the monopoly in a certain industry (ahem Telkom), to an individual asserting their power in the workplace power can easily be abused to the dismay of those beneath them. When I give Buddy a command, he (mostly) listens to me and I believe he does that because he has respect for me like I do for him and that he trusts me to have his best interests at heart. If you had to give a friend or family member a command, they would ask you to check if you aren’t crazy for ordering them to do something instead of asking.

See we have become very defensive when it comes to opinions and even the simple act of helping your fellow man. We want to believe we are always right and authority does not belong in our space but the reality is that authority is a part of our lives and how it is implemented can be the difference between accepting things and living in dismay towards everybody around you.

I am a firm believer in fairness across the board from gender to race and also privilege so when one comes across a situation where fairness gets tossed out the window it is hard to remain rational. For instance, I cannot tell everyone to stop drinking water and make it a rule if I am sitting with a Jojo tank in my office because that would just breed contempt towards my fellow peers. Hence why the solution to almost everything should be the inverse of this intro sentence; Do what I do and not what I say. Be a leader and get down and dirty with your peers, be the change in them, be proactive and make them feel that you are their intellectual equal whilst retaining the sense of authority towards you by not forcing it, but nurturing it. We have a lot of genes left from monkeys in that we follow the monkey see monkey do habit so we all need to make it something worthwhile and positive to follow, not just because were told to, but shown the way.

As I walk down the passage I see Buddy at the food bowl eating greedily all the while I’ve been trying to get him to cut down so I tell him to stop eating and the look he gave me was that of pure hate. Probably because I was holding a sandwich while I said it. Yeah that could be the reason.
