‘Tis the season to…be a hermit

December has many connotations, for some it means holiday and vacation time, FOR others in retail it means chaos time and extra long work hours, we think of Christmas and new year and fresh starts but when it comes to increased crime rate increased death tolls on our roads we don’t give it a second thought.

We jump into our fully loaded “getaway” vehicle slide on our shades and take to the open road living life one Wimpy breakfast and Engen one stop toilet break at a time. If you are travelling this December even if it is just to spend a few days fishing I want to just put it out there that statistically the roads turn into a death trap over December.

The normally relaxed drive between Durban and Johannesburg any other time of the year becomes the Gululies interchange for 500 kilometres and the tollgates looks like there is a mass evacuation order to escape the zombie apocalypse.

I can’t recall how many times the Witbank News journalist got called out to a highway accident in December where the cars involved have GP number plates or even Cape Town plates. I am sure news papers in Kwazulu-Natal would say the same about our MP branded cars filling up their scrap yards.

This is the reality unfortunately, so when you load up your trailer with a braai and pool noodles bound for the golden shores of Margate (South Africa’s own little slice of paradise) according to the matrics, remember to buckle up stick to the speed limit and never drive if you are fighting a losing battle with you eye lids. Also let people know where you are, as I mentioned crime rates also go up. It seems that criminals take the concept of this opportunity very seriously.

You could always just stay and home and play video games Brian loves it. It makes him feel like less of a drain on my oxygen supply.
