I’ll keep dancing in the dark

What did we use before candles? Electricity, apparently.

What did we use before candles? Electricity, apparently. (Crowd laughs)

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, beating a dead horse with a stick or being captain obvious, we are going to be sitting without power for a few hours a day and it’s the running joke for the city I live in. Potholes, no running water and electrical interruptions are synonymous with the name ‘eMalahleni’ and just like a daytime soap, everybody has their opinions on what’s right or wrong and who is to blame. So I promised I wouldn’t give my opinion on anything happening just because there isn’t anything good left to say and my mother taught me that lying is bad.

Instead I want to talk about the good things that can come from this daily ‘cutting off’ of electricity and what it can mean for us as a community. First thing I thought of: jogging. I know January has been rough on some of us with the good food and maybe even that the resolutions have fallen through the floor so what better way to spend your early mornings by going for a jog? I know that myself and Buddy (mostly Buddy) will highly benefit from this and also it will make us a healthier community.

Second thing I thought of that will benefit us: quality family time. What better way to spend the afternoons and evenings without power than to discover your family once again? Mom shouting because there’s no way to cook food and dad having to listen to the kids screaming because the water is dripping out of the shower head at the speed of smell and the toilet doesn’t flush? Pure bliss. Also when everyone has settled down and awaiting the power to kick back on to charge their cell phones, you can always ask them questions like “How was your day?” or even “Wait you’re dating who?” from the comfort of your own chair.

Aside from the obvious things, we are going to make changes to our everyday lives and it will come at the expense of our own comfort, try as we may. Well at least we will be fit enough by that time that we might even be able to run away from our own problems.
