The very statement that drives the economy itself is all too prevalent in our daily lives. We want more, in all aspects, every day and it borders on hedonism, but alas, it’s the hand we are dealt.
I am writing this as a married man and I must admit it feels exactly the same except for the ring I wear on my left hand. My ring is very heavy and it’s not just physical weight, but also the weight of responsibility it carries for you to be the ‘man of the house’ and I cannot be happier for wearing it.
After returning from our honeymoon in Zanzibar, we felt the hunger creeping in and also the lack of wanting to cook so I took a drive and searched the streets for sustenance. Buddy, our puppy, was literally crying when we came home and I’m pretty sure it’s because he couldn’t open the fridge and help himself to all that’s inside, so I decided to take him along to help me choose what to eat. I pulled into the parking of our local Reyno Superette and immediately the craving washed over me. I needed to buy myself a Vitamin Water. See how I said need? I didn’t really need it but my mind was so tuned in that it became a necessity. I placed the order for food and walking to the fridge realised they are out of stock. Disappointed I make my way home knowing that I will be without it and made peace with that.
Why the story about getting food and drawing it out? Well this is where the responsibility comes in. As a married couple we are slowly working on building our lives piece by piece and along come needs. We need a fridge to keep our food in and although we do have one, we want bigger and more space. We have a stockpile of canned foods and although we know that, we want to purchase more every time we do shopping. We have a very comfy bed, but somehow we convince ourselves that we need a better one even though we sleep sound every night. We have become needy, like children screaming for food when the bottle is in front of them. We have forgotten the saying to never let the things we want make us forget the things we have.
My wife and I are eating and I take a sip of my water, not Vitamin Water but hey, who needs it anyway?
