You’ve got a fast car

Sometimes we need to slow down and appreciate life, or avoid speeding fines.

Sometimes we need to slow down and appreciate life, or avoid speeding fines.

There’s a phenomena that’s occurring in our city these days; people are obeying the speed limit. Well at least for the few meters before the camera then it’s all good again. The traffic department have been placing mobile money machines on the busiest roads throughout the day and then as soon as the sun starts to creep away, they come to pick up their bounty like fisherman after a long day of leaving the nets. We all know the law regarding speed on our roads, but when you start getting fines for 2km/h above the limit and getting arrested over a weekend, you have to start questioning whether this was a good idea.

The thing about the law and the enforcing of said law is all about one thing; consistency. I can’t make a rule in my house and tell my wife and daughter that we aren’t allowed chocolates after 5pm and then have them find me snacking on a Bar One while sitting in front of the television. Consistency should be that the cameras are always calibrated and not give false readings that cause unnecessary headaches and also the officers that catch the speedsters should realise that if you want to arrest drivers for breaking the speed limit with 5km/h after they cannot pay the spot fine, you’re yourself breaking the law.

I believe we should be held accountable when we break the law, from speeding to murder and everything in between but when the manner of accountability changes and the punishment doesn’t seem just? That’s when you have a problem.

I’ve been admiring all the holes in the road, the beautiful scenery of a truck swerving into our lanes and also some garbage along the road. Driving so slow these days has it’s perks I suppose.
