Can you truly say you are thankful for what you have in your life?
Every November for the past few years, Black Friday has been an event that we in South Africa have adopted as our own. Much like most of our television shows, we take a concept and just adapt it to our local standard and Black Friday is no different.
In America it follows after Thanksgiving Day, a day where friends and family gather around the dinner table and go around saying what they are thankful for then on midnight they put on their war paint, comfortable shoes and storm the gates of various shops in search of discounted goods.
I have no issue with discount, I love sales and getting things for cheaper but at what cost? Viral videos have been doing the rounds where we, in South Africa, literally break down doors and storm the shops to save a R1000 on an item which has been marked higher just before Black Friday so it seems you are saving, but you are being lied to. We have been duped in South Africa when it comes to Black Friday where items are basically the same price but it can still bring out the animal inside all of us to get that bargain.
I fell into this trap once before especially when it comes to buying new and shiny things, but then I realised that what I have currently in my life should be enough to last me a lifetime. Just because your phone is a few years old is fine. That older model television? Works like a charm. That coffee machine that makes that funny noise when you start it up? Still tastes like the best.
May we all see how blessed we actually are and that material things will only give you temporary happiness because I can wake up and choose what I want to eat. I have the most amazing wife and beautiful daughter. I woke up in good health and I can appreciate the small things in life. I don’t have quantity, but I sure as hell have quality.
