Bodyguards are very expensive

I refer to the Witbank News dated June 6 and the article by Ms Zita Goldswain on page three.

I could not believe the figures, so I phoned Ms Goldswain who confirmed the figures and re-iterated that the Rand amounts were those given to her by the council.

I quote the paragraph i.e. “The six body guards according to Mr. Van Vuuren cost less than R100 000 a week”.

Is that for a five day working week?  If yes, then that equates to R3 333.33 per day per body guard. Something is wrong- and not with my calculations, but with the system.

When Mr Van Vuuren states less than R100 000 a week, for the six body guards, does he really think that that is not a lot of money, or is he saying it with, as the expression goes, “with tongue in cheek”.

I do not for one moment suggest that body guards are not necessary, but I really would suggest the council negotiate with the local police commissioner to get full time members of the police force to do the guarding of personnel.

Not for free, but on a contract basis and in that way the local police can benefit and so will the council. I am sure that the police commissioner will not charge R 3333.33 per day per constable. This arrangement if negotiated will be a win, win, for the State and the council of eMalahleni.

Ego quies meus caussa – I rest my case.
