With an average of 50 funerals between Saturday and Sundays, delays and confrontations as everyone is racing against time are bound to happen, However this was taken into serious extremes on July 19. The gate which is used as both the entrance and exit was completely blocked, as intolerance prevailed, there was a huge commotion. Cars were carried by the people, exchange of fists became apparent as everyone was fighting to either enter or exit the cemetery.
One could not help but to draw a comparison from the largest township in SA (Soweto) where funeral are more than triple the number as compared to ours. No such stampede has ever been seen because of a simple measure of having an entrance and exit gate and this is a serious indictment on your ability to do accurate Risk Assessment and planning.
I hereby write this letter to make a humble plea to the municipality albeit it reactionary, to consider as a matter of urgency to open another gate so there can be an entrance and exit, so that the mourners can bury their loved ones with honour, respect and tranquillity they rightly deserve. As we all know that the death of a loved one brings all sorts of confusion.
