eMalahleni has its own remarkable runners

The 90th Comrades Marathon belonged to South Africa, and it was about time, too, but eMalahleni has its own remarkable runners who completed the race.

On Sunday, May 31 over 20 000 runners took to the road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
At the start of the race the weather was cool but during the day it started to warm up, which affected the runners along the road.

Burt van Schalkwyk completed the Comrades Marathon on Sunday, May 31 in a time of 10:48:27 after having a heart attack some months before.

George Weyers completed his 20th Comrades Marathon and for him it has been a life changing experience.
Burt van Schalkwyk had a heart attack on February 4 after he ran a night race at HTS Middelburg. Shortly after that he had a double bypass. Not even three months and three weeks later after the operation, he ran the Comrades Marathon and completed in a time of 10:48:27.

What makes Burt’s story more remarkable is that on April 27 he competed in his first race a 21km in Bethal.
He ran the Comrades without running anything longer than a 42km or Ultra Marathon.

Dianne Chapman completed her first Comrades Marathon in 11:42.
