Bikers open ‘throttle’ for children

Bikers are known for making a difference in the community. So if you ride a motorbike, then come and support the Toy Run.

Motorbike enthusiasts are gearing up for the Highveld Toy Run. This run will be hosted by the Bikers Corner Association on November 21 at Reyno Ridge Club. It will start at 08:00 till 16:00.

“Covid-19 made this year very, very tough for us all. Safe havens were, and still are flooded with children because their parents cannot look after them. Many people lost their jobs or were retrenched, both parents were working to make ends meet but now they have no income. Also, during the lockdown, children were abused physically and mentally. Parents could not cope with being at home 24/7 and the constant stress caused by the forced lockdown got them frustrated, and they turned to violence,” said one of the organisers Marchand de Kock.

Most of these children are in dire need of a teddy bear-friend they can trust and share their emotions or secrets with but unfortunately a teddy bear cannot fill an empty tummy.

“Toys and gift vouchers from Pick n Pay, Checkers, Spar, OK or other outlets will greatly be appreciated. These children also need toiletries, clothes, shoes, and more,” Marchand said.

On the day of the Toy Run, strict Covid-19 regulations will be followed. Bikers and visitors are requested to use buffs, masks and sanitation spray.

“Please step forward and support us, help a child, make them feel wanted. Be a hero,” Marchand said.

Entry will be a toy or a gift voucher. Badges are available at R30 each. A limited amount of printed Toy Run t-shirts and buffs will be available on sale.
