Emalahleni Independent Living empowered
The organisation has a mission to provide leadership support, skills development, and disability awareness programs for people living with disabilities in the community.
The Emalahleni Independent Living were empowered when they received a donation from Eskom Duvha Power Station and Steinmuller Africa.
The donation of three laptops, three office desktops, six office chairs, one digital camera and one printer was held on Wednesday, August 31 at Klarinet.
Emalahleni Independent Living was founded in 2019 by a group of adult persons living with disabilities in Klarinet.
The organisation focuses on evangelizing to persons with disabilities and provision of various assistance and support to the special needs community.
The organisation’s other programme is home visitation, exploring and exposing the socio-economic, and political conditions that persons with disabilities are going through ‒ the level of poverty, unemployment, access to business opportunities, lack of access to education, skills training, poor service delivery and many more challenges faced by persons living with disabilities.
“Having started with a group of about 25 persons living with disabilities, 24 deaf persons and one with physical disabilities, the group reduced to around five persons due to migration to other provinces in search of better living conditions,” said Mr Michael Shekwa.
Having engaged and researched on these matters affecting people living with disabilities, Mr Shekwa brought the idea of forming an NPO in Emalahleni to address the challenges faced by persons living with disabilities.
After several engagements with particular individuals and certain stakeholders, a general meeting was called to map a way forward. Emalahleni Independent Living (EIL) was founded by 15 persons with disabilities who were to become board members with Phumzile Lukhele, Sibonisile Dhlamini and Mr Shekwa being elected to lead as executive board members.
