Vandalism at electrical distribution stations is a major headache
Residents are fuming as it directly affects them. Ward Councilor suspects sabotage.
Infrastructure is becoming more and more alluring to thieves especially when it comes to electrical substations and electrical distribution boxes.
In the recent past, residents of Extension 8 have been feeling the sting of no power after cables were stolen and infrastructure left damaged.
The substation on Van Wyk Street is consistently being targeted.

Thieves have become so relaxed that cables stolen at the substation are being burned inside the substation.
On Sunday, 13 August, residents left with no power noticed that the door of the substation was standing open and cables were removed. “The door has no lock. I have reported this urgent matter numerous times,” said Ward Councillor Kim Faduk.

Another easy target for criminals is the electrical distribution boxes situated in the area.
The box situated close to the Van Wyk Street Substation has repeatedly been broken into and illegal connections could be found.
“There were instances of illegal connections. Squatters keep stealing power and the council keeps removing the wires. I insisted that the box be welded shut and it was but the teams keep going back and forth to this box for tampering,” said Faduk.

In one day three electrical distribution boxes were vandalised on August 15.
The first one is situated on Tennyson Street, Eugene Marais Street and Gray Avenue where cables have been cut after the doors have been forcefully opened, damaging the lock and door.
Another Substation situated in Kipling Street is also targeted as the surrounding wall has been damaged leaving openings where thieves can gain access.
“I’ve reported this several times. My ward committee member went to investigate and found that Kipling Substation has been broken into,” explained Faduk.

According to the councillor, the matter was reported on May 27 but nothing has been done.
“We wonder if it is done deliberately…sabotage…” concluded Faduk.
