Police in Hluhluwe on Monday arrested a truck driver for allegedly illegally selling coal that was meant to be his cargo.

Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize said the arrest took place after an intelligence-driven investigation.

“The truck driver (45) was suspected of driving an empty truck to the Richards Bay port terminal. Police spotted the suspected truck and searched it,” he said.

“Investigations revealed that the truck was already empty and its cargo of coal had been sold and off-loaded by the driver before the truck reached its destination.

“It is alleged that the driver was travelling to the port terminal to turn around and to fabricate the delivery of coal,” said Mkhize.

The truck driver appeared at Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of theft.

“The suspect was remanded in custody, and he will appear for a formal bail application on Tuesday, 4 July,” said Mkhize.
