THE task of herding cattle turned into a life and death struggle for a nine-year-old boy who survived being constricted by a huge African rock python.
And while his bravery and will to live enabled him to escape the snake’s deathly grip, the young lad has been left in need of psychological counselling.
Sikahle Nxumalo was reportedly herding cows with other boys near eMathwabuli forest at eMacekane outside Empangeni when he was attacked by the reptile, renowned for its ability to crush and devour large prey.
His mother, Hloniphile Nxumalo, told the Zululand Observer on Wednesday that the family was still shocked over what happened two weeks ago.
‘It is just unbelievable to us. People never survive these attacks. We give God all the glory,’ she said.
Hloniphile said other boys ran away when they saw the snake, leaving her son alone facing death as the python coiled around his body.
‘They were also shocked and left him there. He told us the giant snake had constricted him, but he bravely managed to fight it off and ran home.
‘When he arrived, he just collapsed and remained unconscious for hours,’ said Hloniphile.

Sikahle was rushed to Empangeni Garden Clinic for medical attention, shortly after the incident.
‘For a while now he has not been able to sleep and is having nightmares about the incident
‘Fortunately he is receiving counselling to try and help him deal with everything.
‘We thank God for sparing him and for giving him the courage to fight.’
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Provincial Communications Officer, Musa Mtambo, confirmed that the incident was reported to the main office.
‘A full statement will be released once all people involved have been contacted,’ he said.
•The public is reminded that the African rock python is a protected species and should not be killed.
