Discover Hluhluwe

Home of the AmaZulu

Hluhluwe is set in the heart of Zululand. The town is known as the traditional home of the AmaZulu, who migrated to this rich land during the 16th century. Evidence along the coast and lower-lying river valleys in Hluhluwe suggests that the area was home to Iron Age communities as long ago as 300 AD. Ancient metal working sites dating back to about 1000 AD have also been discovered inside the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Indeed, this is the oldest Big Five game reserve in Africa. Back in 1895, the Zulu kings declared it a conservation area. The area used to be the hunting grounds of the mighty King Shaka Zulu. No-one else was allowed to enter it and if caught poaching, intruders would be killed ‘no questions asked’. Today the game reserve is world renowned for its rhino conservation efforts.
