Durban’s R300m cruise terminal nears completion

Speaking to the Berea Mail, Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa said the Covid-19 pandemic may have delayed the project but it is currently in its final stage of completion.

“We plan to open the facility for cruise vessels at the start of the 2021/2022 cruise season, when confirmed by the various cruise lines,” said Volk.

He noted the length of quay available will be 340m, while the building itself is 5 000m².

“There will be parking for 300 vehicles, with kerbside drop-off facilities for six buses, dedicated baggage drop-off areas, separate screening and temporary holding areas, as well as separate passenger entry and exit points,” he said.

The passenger terminal could accommodate about 4 000 passengers.

Volk said the new terminal was envisaged as a project that will boost tourism numbers by making Durban a more desirable destination for cruise ships from around the globe.

“Once complete, the terminal will transform the port experience for cruise passengers. It will also have appeal beyond the cruise sector thanks to its contemporary feel, improved energy efficiency, as well as a flexible space for conferences and events,” he said.
