Wedding called off after groom, father arrested in drunk driving blitz

Several motorists detained between Saturday night and early Sunday in Newcastle as KZN intensifies law enforcement for Easter

A wedding scheduled for 11:00 on Sunday in Newcastle was called off after the groom and his father were arrested during a drunk driving operation.

The arrests were part of a Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) roadblock conducted overnight, which saw 45 motorists detained between Saturday night and early Sunday morning, The Witness reports.

Those arrested included a lecturer, a safety manager, two teachers, two nurses, a pharmacist, a chief liaison officer from a local municipality and a student.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said: “Arrest all of them and have no mercy.”

The arrested motorists are expected to appear in court.
