Inspiration for local ‘belles’

University lecturer speaks about being a widow, mother and an academic

MORE than 300 female employees of local machinery manufacturer Bell Equipment enjoyed an inspirational address by University of Zululand’s senior lecturer Dr Sbongile Magagula on Friday.

In celebration of national Women’s Day and women’s month, Magagula translated her long list of personal achievements and stumbling blocks as a widow, mother and academic into wise words of wisdom for her audience.

Opening her address on a positive note, she sang ‘Wathinta abafazi wathinta imbokodo ubobhasoba’ with the participation of the crowd.

‘This song, for those who do not know the meaning of its words, say you touch a woman, you touch a rock – be careful,’ said Magagula.

In reflecting on the Zulu song, she explained that women in industry have both beauty and brains as they employ their intellectual elements to make wise decisions about work, life and loved ones.

However, she urged women to remain cautious of unplanned pregnancies and HIV/Aids.

‘Always remember that unprotected sex is risky and one can contract pandemic diseases that are silent killers,’ said Magagula.

She recommended that employees also take precautions of their social health by encouraging staff development and training in the workplace.

‘You can be an innovative leader at work. Improve your education to qualify for promotion.

‘Know your rights and make use of your EAPs (Employee Assistance Programmes).

‘Transform yourselves from being labourers to being innovators.’
