Rubly’s time for ‘repotting’
Zululand Hospice manager reminisces about her work in the community

Spring ushers in a colourful season with new beginnings – and for general manager of Zululand Hospice Lynn Rubly, an opportunity to ‘repot’ her personal and professional career.
Rubly has been working for Hospice for almost a decade and has led the organisation as manager to many exciting accomplishments over the past six years
Upon landing the role of manager in 2008, Lynn and her dedicated team succeeded in the mammoth task of obtaining Hospice’s first healthcare accreditation.
But this determined individual, packed with the energy to go through an 18-hour day, was not always operational in the charity sphere.
She worked in the corporate world for almost 20 years in Johannesburg.
‘Once you realise that you have achieved what you set out to, personally or professionally, it is then time to ‘repot’, says Rubly. With that, she decided to relocate to Zululand where she was instantly taken to working with people suffering with HIV and Aids. Zululand Hospice became her focul point of helping others.
Her highlights over the years as manager has been receiving almost R2-million from the Lotto in 2010, forging two meaningful relationships with the local uMhlathuze Department of Health and the National Department of Health for the first time in Hospice’s history.
‘We have also built a great relationship with Life Time Care Hospice of Rochester in the state of New York, that visit us twice a year and provide phenomenal support,’ explains Rubly.
Rubly is currently serving her last month with Hospice and will be heading off to the UK in October.
‘It was a privilege to have met incredibly humble people from our community who have helped with various donations over the years. I have fulfilled my purpose here and believe that Hospice is well positioned to go into its next leg of the journey.’
She hopes that her position will not be big shoes to fill, but rather that she ‘left a big enough footprint’.
‘As Zululanders we can help by getting to know who and what Hospice is and what the organisation is about.
‘Be it contributing time or money, anyone can make a difference by helping someone with terminal illness.’
