Stricter festive policing

Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa visits Zululand

ZULULANDERS were thrilled on Monday morning when the National Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa and KZN Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni made their presence felt at local shopping malls in the area.

The minister and his team visited a number of malls and taxi ranks in Richards Bay, Empangeni and eSikhaleni as part of a festive season crime-fighting operation.

The minister’s spokesperson Zweli Mnisi says the visit was aimed at encouraging community members to team up with police during this period to curb crime.

‘We have so far monitored a very peaceful and quite festive season and we want to ensure that we continue to carry that through.

‘The minister is a people’s person and enjoys interacting with members of the police force and community.

‘Motivating the police to continue with their good work is also important.

‘Emphasising police visibility in areas will ensure community members’ confidence in us.

‘We want to let them know that if they seek help, the police are available,’ he said.

After a short briefing at the Richards Bay Police Station, Mthethwa addressed hundreds of shoppers at the Richards Bay Taxi Rank.

‘We are going to increase the force over the festive period and make sure that criminals are brought to task.

‘The police are here to help you and we will do our very best to ensure the safety of the citizens of our country.

‘I would like to encourage community members to work with the police as a team as this will help reduce the amount of crime,’ said Mthethwa.
