Talented sportsman dies
Community bids farewell to the founder of Richards Bay Football Club
THE Zululand Observer notes with sadness the passing of Richard Pearmain, a prominent sportsman who played a major role in various Zululand codes in past decades.
Richard founded Richards Bay Football Club in 1977 and served in various roles (player, coach, Chairman, Zululand Manager) until 1986.
He claimed his proudest moment was playing for Richards Bay Football Club in the same team as his sons, Garry and Scott.
Richard also played rugby for the Richards Bay Rugby Club in the late 70s and early 80s.
He represented Rhodesia at baseball in the early 60s and was invited to try out for the New York Yankees as a teenager (this never materialised as his dad insisted on him finishing his schooling and trade).
He also played rugby for Southern Rhodesia in the same era.
Richard played softball and baseball in Zululand in the 80s and early 90s and represented KZN at the Masters inter-provincial tournament in Durban, in the 90s.
His memorial service will be held at 11am on Thursday 24 January, at the Richards Bay Methodist Church in Angler’s Rod.
